Apple iPhone release on June 11?
According to CNET, Cingular [aka, the new AT&T] has "confirmed" June 11 as the release date for Apple's iPhone. Keep in mind that confirmation in this case is unofficial as it supposedly comes from a front-line sales support person. See, after a call to Cingular's customer service, CNET was transfered to sales where they were told of the magical date. Of course, all this makes perfect sense as the 11th also marks the kickoff of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference where Steve and Co are always keen to announce new wares.[Thanks, Adam]

The iphone will flop, and it will start the decline of the Apple Dynasty.
Gary Conrad @ Mar 30th 2007 8:18AM
i am so very glad you dont want one. that will make the line shorter when people are lining up to get one in the middle of the night on the 11th. maybe you could go buy the new blackberry that they now cant give away in at&t.
Eric Krahwinkel @ May 3rd 2007 3:15PM
oh yeah... that's why over a million people are already signed up to get one.
Nequam @ Mar 30th 2007 4:10AM
I'm still looking forward to the o2 Flame, much more appealing.
*Note to self.... prepare to be underwhelmed on June 11th.
elan @ Mar 30th 2007 4:23AM
If true, this will be the first time Apple will introduce a Newton in June.
Fernando @ Mar 30th 2007 5:50AM
I honestly cannot wait to have one...
Mike @ Mar 30th 2007 7:17AM
You know what I kinda agree with ya'll. I'm not getting that phone.
I have different reasons though. I have a phone. I have an iPod. I don't need any of those features. I don't need any of those features. I stress that last point because I truly don't need what the iPhone will offer.
Do I think the features on the iPhone are cool? Heck ya. Are they played out and on a lot of phones? Maybe, yes.
What the heck I'm sick of is people bashing the product BEFORE anyone, anyone has ever laid eyes, hands, or they're mouth on it. I mean damn people. I understand the point that it can be seen that Apple has been pumping out similar items. That's great. Good for them. They seem to be doing a great job at it.
So what if they could manufactured a washing machine and charged double for it. I bet someone would pay for it and be totally happy with it. I'd think they were weird, but point is they have a great marketing department and know what their customers want.
I don't think the iPhone will be a flop and I just don't think it will be the end all, must have product of 2007. I don't care about that. I just want to see an end to everyone gloating over the coolness of their stupid RAZR pieces of crap.
Thanks, and good night.

As long as Jobs is in apple.....There is noo damn way iphone or apple will fall
Travis Jenkins @ Mar 30th 2007 7:47AM
I think everyone's post are valid here. I echo Mike's comments about product bashing. Perhaps I see the world a bit differently, but I'm grateful we even live in an era with such luxury. We should be thankful there a Apple's out there innovating new products for us greedy people. Too high of a price? Sure. Can your phone and iPod accomplish the same thing? Sure. Does that mean others shouldn't' be excited about it? Of course not.
If we all had the mentality that....I don't need X product because I have Y product that does the same thing....half the things you purchase or already own would be completely irrelevant.
I'm a Verizon XV6700 user. My phone does way more than the iPhone. Nevertheless, I still find myself obsessed by the beauty of this thing. I use my phone for: a phone, a web browser, google maps, texting, weather, picture taker, laptop modem. The iPhone does them all except maybe the modem part...but we don't totally know that yet. Even if they say no...I'm sure they'll be a hack.
In a nutshell guys...keep the bashing to a minimum until the darn thing is at least in stores. It really does spoil the excitement for others.
Travis

of course AT&T can't give BlackBerry's away, they make too much from the large amount of companies that make massive purchases and pay for BlackBerry services.
Pitch Black @ Mar 30th 2007 9:00AM
Hum! Ok time to plan the moves to get in on this “gravy train” and it will be one!
Ok, let’s see now:
1. Buy a couple hundred of these puppies.
2. Promptly bust the weak ass SIM lock (and it will be weak).
3. Contact my cousin in the UK and ship them to him for EU resale.
4. Or have him post them up on eBay UK for a tidy profit each.
5. Cash in my hand = (new motorcycle for the summer or bigger turbo for the
ride).
6. Oh and if the going is good, get a whole new ride or put cash down on new
crib.
The only thing that will put the kibosh on this plan is if the SIM lock is extra
strong but it won’t be. Capitalism is soooooo sweet ;^)...
Beamey @ Mar 30th 2007 9:02AM
The true character of this phone won't appear until around august when the hype has died down and the phone has lost its "Apple" mysticism. I honestly want to see how this thing does as a daily cell phone and not just a toy. Until then I will hold back on a yea or nay. Go Capitalisim!!!
Paul D @ Mar 30th 2007 9:04AM
Dear Engadget editors, and specifically Thomas RIcker:
"Release" is not an intransitive verb. iPhone is not releasing anything. Rather, it is being released.
o0adam0o @ Mar 30th 2007 9:52AM
Too late...ordered me a Hermes...plus i dont want cingular...im happy with my TMO $5 unlimited EDGE (good enough for the price!)
I dont think the iphone will flop....I work in a warehouse and the day it was announced i literaly heard/saw groups of people talking about it. I know at least 2-3 friends of mine that are waiting for it and they dont know much about tech....so with my experience im gonna say its gonna be a hit....
Apple will loose when companies start beating them to products/inovation and not while they just make a "____ killer" rival product.
mel @ Mar 30th 2007 10:17AM
hey Pitch Black... i suppose you'll be making TONS of money with the COUPLE HUNDRED 24 month AT&T accounts you'll have to pay for, too.
brilliant plan. please do it.
Frankenstein Black @ Mar 30th 2007 11:19AM
Ok mel, explain to me what AT&T has to do with it? Will I not be able to buy these from an Apple store with out a contract? I Think so. Why? - because you can buy contract free phones now. Next step, bust the Crap SIM lock, ship and sell :^)...
Traveller @ Mar 30th 2007 1:27PM
Well if the word surrounding the launch is true, he doesn't need to buy an AT&T account to use the phone.
A) You can buy one without phone service.
B) Supposedly, 18 Months of Free AT&T phone service will be provided. Supposedly, he doesn't need to buy a thing. (Although this part remains to be seen)
Goodman @ Mar 30th 2007 10:20AM
Hopefully by then I'll have a Helio Ocean... half the price with 3G, GPS, PlaysForSure, over the air music purchases, steaming video, retractable keyboards (one for dialing, one for typing), the ability to shoot and send video, full web browsing with the ability to save pictures off web pages, etc.

Who the hell needs an iPhone?! It's overpriced and unnecessary, just like art. But it will always find its audience like art does. Everyone who cares about design and usability has to give the iPhone credit there.
I'm gonna buy it just because of that.
mel @ Mar 30th 2007 11:20AM
i'm buying an iPhone as soon as i can. i don't care about the absolute cutting edge of technology, i care about the best interface...
i'm tired drilling down through 20 levels of menu to find what i'm looking for in some random place. [HELLO? moto?] i have no need for a "smart phone". 99% of you don't. i just don't want to carry a phone and my iPod.
i don't need to download 100 megabyte files to my PHONE - just check the weather and game scores. i'll probably NEVER use safari on the thing. my only gripe is no GPS, but whatever, it also doesn't have 1080p HD video recording w/ image stabilization or a 10 megapixel /10x optical zoom camera... should i complain about that, too? and why can't i run photoshop extended or final cut on the thing? some people will never be happy. those people should go complain about the N95 not having a qwerty kb.
mel @ Mar 30th 2007 11:49AM
keynote iphone release... wonderful.
i hope this doensn't mean that steveJ is going to spend another 2 hour keynote talking about his phone. i wonder if apple is even planning on making computers anymore...
Frankenstein Black @ Mar 30th 2007 11:23AM
Pitch is right! The only thing that stops this is a strong azz SIM lock to AT&T and I don't see that happening....
williambraski @ Mar 30th 2007 11:24AM
Yeah but it's still on Cingular. Fewest dropped calls on any network, because you probably can't place one in the first place. :)
Adam @ Mar 30th 2007 2:48PM
The iPhone just does not work as a business phone. However, I would be very interested to have this device, minus the phone --- Just the next-gen iPod.
When is that going to materalize?
Brian @ Mar 30th 2007 3:00PM
The size is primarily for the screen. Having a fully functional internet browser on a handheld device the size of a shuffle (which apple could do if they wanted to) doesn't make any sense. Don't compalin about the size being too big, your going to be surfing the net on this thing! and wathing movies! Well, I'm going to be, because I'm getting one. I think people aren't realizing this isn't just a phone and an iPod player. It's bridging the gap between a laptop and a cell phone. The screen isn't going to get scratched up as people are predicting because people aren't going to treat it like a piece of junk, like they to with most of their other stuff. People take care of the stuff they find valuable (iPods, macbooks, digital cameras etc.). It's going to be a great product, and a lot of people wont need it, or be able to afford it, so they are going to critize it. Wont bother me much when I'm using mine : )
js @ Mar 30th 2007 4:32PM

A lot of people forget or dont realize that the thing that makes apple so great is all of the products work perfectly with their Mac. For Mac users that could be the best thing about any of apples products. There are never any WTF is going on moments when using apple products, everything just works. To me this is the single best thing about apple. Never have I had any sort of problems with syncing my ipod with my mac or any single thing go wrong. With apple just about everything is a user error. Not to mention the iPhone itself and all the features will be a great little gadget to have. Sell your cell phone you have now cell your ipod you have now and the iphone is a not so pricy upgrade.
haloz @ Apr 10th 2007 8:13AM
people who dont want or dont see the potential of the product are thick! i live in the uk and am deff getting one. why? well lets see.. a widescreen ipod, a revolutionary phone, a breakthrough internet device. are you getting it?? i believe some people just dont want apple to do well. stop hating and buy one for the wife! bet she wants one ;)

I returned my Ipod for purchase full price, I am thankful that I became aware of the awesomeness of the Iphone at just the right time. I, like many others would not pay so much for such a cool toy,my p.o.shi*_cell phone gets me by and my 12 cd player is just groovy,I don't need internet away from home much,i have an ok old school camera so why am I hot to get the Iphone asap???Because I don't want to be the last person that I know to own new tech, like my past history proves, and all the excuses i've used to not buy N.T. the real big reason is I bought july options target price's 115&120 and I'm making a bundle of cash off apple's sell up to Iphone's grand opening day. My phone is free with small investment and it's rising daily jump in now and your Iphone will be free too.
Champion of Truth and Other Pretty, Shiny Things @ May 30th 2007 3:56AM
Dear Paul D,
You are a moron. "Release" in the title is a noun, not a verb. So whether or not the verb "to release" is transitive or intransitive is wholly irrelevant. For your education, iPhone is a noun-as-an-adjective that modifies release. Honestly, nobody is impressed that you know the word "intransitive," especially when you use it to make a painfully incorrect point.
Try to be intelligent before you criticize the work of others.
Cheers!

I don't think the iphone is going to be a "flop". I do think that Jobs is throwing an awfully unrealistic estimated 10,000,000 units sold in first couple years. Apple's P/E ratio jumped to 52 after that rediculous number was set, and there's no way they'll hit it.
For perspective, according to an article on this subject, Blackberry sold approx. 5.2M units last year, and they are sold by almost every carrier, have a cult-like following, and are half the price. The iphone will be sold by one carrier, will not appeal to business customers, and is priced along side business-class smart phones.
Owners in apple stock will feel the pain when Apple sells 2 million phones their first year, and the P/E ration plumets back down to reality at 25-30 multiple.
The screen is not going to be any more of a problem than any other touch creen smart phone on the market. They all get smudgy, and scratchy...that's why they have screen protectors.
The size of the phone is comparable to other smart phones on the market, but it's much, much thinner than most of them. If you want a little bity phone that you can't feel in your pocket, then you'll just have to get a flip phone...the razr has absolutely found it's nitch that way. The laws of phsyics and current technology makes if physically impossible to make a 3.5 inch screen 1 inch. I've done the math, it just doesn't work out.
This phone is built to appeal to it's constituents. Apple and Ipod lovers. High School, College Kids, Moms, and individuals who have recognized that trying to run desktop class applications for business use on a phone simply isn't worth the trouble.
The bottom line is that this APPEARS as though it will be a great product. I'm sure future markups will just get better.

i just got a call from Sprint oferring me 100 bucks to keep my S-phone till my contract with them ends up, for 4 more months...tell me:is Sprint scared of the Iphone? if so they should offer me more them that, second, i think this new phone is for those who love tecnology and new gadgets, and a lot of people won't be able to afford it, and yes, for those who want a new toy, Be happy and switch to iPhone, i will do and i am sure there'll be thousands of followers... so PHONE CO.'s, Phone sellers, dealers or makers... show us your best offer, WE ALL KNOW this is the I-AGE, meaning, from now on they will say " before the iphone, or after the iphone', and yes, the internet on iphone ... should i mention it... i guess we just have to Wait and see...
i know there are guys in there waiting to switch/ break a contract ...to get a iphone...
i am sure apple will rock...
So, prepare the red carpet, and please WELCOME THE IPHONE!!!!!

the problems is after fews months of using the iphone the screen will get all scratchy because there are no phone on the market right now that the screens can resit the scratch like the nokia 8800 sirocco well if you talk about beauty i think nokia 8600 Luna design are beat any phone on the market right now.

iPhone," the name the entire free world had all but unanimously christened it from the time it'd been nothing more than a twinkle in Stevie J's eye (comments, Cisco?). Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 4GB or 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quad-band GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode -- no word on standby time yet.
the other mobile phone producers nokia, sony, samsung etc. can make like this?

I was once carpooling with my colleagues during rush hour, checking googleearth on iPhone easily and going home earlier. To be honest, I couldn't be happier having an iPhone. I'm also a big movie guy, but you know, thinkging of paying a movie twice, one for digital format, one for DVD movie, simply makes me sick, especially when you already own DVD version. Luckily the problem was solved by owning a DVD to iPhone Converter, the one I'm using is AVex, and I happened to bookmark an informative blog: Youtronic, which claims it encyclopedia of AVex, PQ, Cucusoft, when I did encounter problems with AVex. Common problems such as key exchange, audio and video out of sync, noisy/choppy audio, sticky/stuttering video, activation, video formats support, os compatibility, parental control, etc, have detailed answers. Pretty good Q & A blog.
